The cause of the vast majority of heart attacks is the
rupture of atherosclerotic plaque within the coronary arteries
(arteries that supply blood to the heart muscle itself). Plaque
rupture occurs silently in many instances, where the rupture either
is NOT followed by clot formation within the coronary artery or
where the clot quickly dissolves. In fact, the typical heart
attack occurs in the following sequence: 1) plaque rupture; 2)
clot formation; 3) clot persistence; and finally 4) death of heart
muscle. Following plaque rupture, whether leading to a heart attack
or not, healing of the plaque occurs over time with deposition of
calcium. The presence of calcium within the walls of the coronary
arteries thus indicates that plaque rupture occured at
some point in the past. And, having had plaque rupture
obviously indicates the presence of plaque, atherosclerosis and
cardiovascular disease. At The Heart Attack Prevention Institute
(HAPI) of Naples, FL, patients have the convenience
of obtaining coronary calcium score (CCS) testing at an
independent radiology facility (ProScan Imaging) located right
next door.
